Online Indian drug dictionary – Indian Pharmacopeia

By | April 24, 2007

When I was in medical transcription training, we were provided with Quick Look Drug Reference for medicine search and its dosage details.  I was surprised to see its features.  It was extensive with all the drug names, brand and generic names, therapeutic category, usage, dose, and dosage forms.  We learned that a generic drug can be sold with different brand names produced by different companies.  For example: aspirin is a generic drug (original formula), which is available under brand names of Ascriptin, Bayer Aspirin, Easprin, Ecotrin, Halfprin, ZORprin, etc (in USA).

After looking at this electronic drug reference for American drugs, I thought that there will be an Indian electronic drug reference.  I searched a lot over the net for nearly one month, but was unable to find it. After passing through class training and on-job training, I was put on regular roles and started searching again.  While searching the Indian Medical Association website, I came to know about the site MedCLIK, which provides an online drug reference for Indian medicines.

Direct link for the Drug Dictionary: http://www.medclik.com/MedCLIKEncr/Default.aspx

In MedCLIK, besides the above information, they also indicate the manufacturers’ name and price.  I think it is very helpful.  If you know a brand, just key in and you can find the generic name of the drug and the list of brands available for that with price and company information.

You can see the below screenshot I have taken for brand search for “gentamicin,” an eye drops preparation.

Note: I am not a pharma student to answer your complex pharmaceutical questions. Please do not ask me to provide some brands data names in excel sheet or the copy of electronic drug reference. Please go to the above site and purchase it. Whatever I can provide, I have provided here. Need more? Then, log into MedCLIK and explore. Thanks in advance!

Thanks, Naveen for the url. I knew that such a site is available for Indian drugs but could not find the URL after google search. Registered medical practitioners can get a free copy of MIMS. A similar site is CIMS which also gives the different brand names, indications, dosage, ADRs, and a lot.

I have searched in that when MedCLIK was offline for few days. What I came to know is that, it has more and accurate data than any other and it can be accessed without registering. It has lot of options too.

    Hi,

Thanks for your valuable help. I am too a home-based Medical Transcriptionist working for Heartland-Spryance (a diploma holder in Mech Engg & got trained in Medical Transcription at Coimbatore KGISL).

Once again, thank you very much for providing this information. It is of great help, as of now only I have been able to find a Indian Medical Drug Reference.

Edited for removing mail address. Publishing mail openly on net can attract a huge spam.

      Dear Ashok,

I can’t find time to do all these things, that is why at the beginning of the post there is a note in green color. Log into MedCLIK and find it yourself. You can also just Google the drug and find the generic, then put them into http://www.rxlist.com or http://www.drugs.com to see more details.

      Hope you will understand.

As the article says, I am not a pharma or medicine student to clear these doubts. You should ask these details your physician rather than asking somebody on the Internet.

Google it to find the generics. Then go to the link given, click generics, and you can see various brands of that drug.

Thank you very much for contacting and appreciating my work. I am just a transcriptionist and know how to use these dictionaries to find out whether a medication is suitable for the condition listed. I am not a doctor to prescribe something or help choose the correct medicine. You need to contact a physician to find out that. Hope you understand.

I am not a doctor to find a solution for you, but my mom had psychosis and we consulted a psychologist here in Hyderabad. He prescribed few medications after a one hour interview and those medications worked amazingly. Now, she is back to her baseline. While transcribing medical reports, I come across few wonderful medications that solve depression problem. Find a famous psychiatrist in your area, search in Google, and consult.

@ Divyansh. Naveen is right, there are several good medications but they should be prescribed by psychiatrist. Effect of these drugs starts only after 2-3 weeks of regular treatment. So you have to be patient and consistent.

If you know the generic formula of those drugs, you can find out about them on MedClik. I think you cannot import them from India to your country. If you know somebody from India, they can bring in while coming from India.
