My favorite Firefox extensions/add-ons – Part 1

By | May 16, 2007

firefoxI have been using Firefox for the last one year and I like it.I have started using it because of tabbed browsing (now, new version of IE also has this feature). When I learned about extensions, I installed few and surprised at the extra features they add. I don’t think I will return to IE anymore.Extensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to Firefox, from a simple toolbar button to a completely new feature. They allow you to customize Firefox to fit your own needs and preferences, while letting Firefox itself light and lean.Below is a list of my favorite extensions:

Adblock Plus:I use it to avoid display of Ads in Rediffmail and Yahoo mail.It also blocks the images, banners, etc.You can add the ad servers list to it to block the ads shown from that particular server. For example: Google, Yahoo, Clicksor, Adbrite, Bidvertiser, etc.

Description: “Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them.

Right-click on a banner and choose “Adblock” from the context menu – the banner won’t be downloaded again. Maybe even replace parts of the banner address with star symbols to block similar banners as well. Or you select a filter subscription when Adblock Plus starts up the first time, then even this simple task will usually be unnecessary: the filter subscription will block most advertisements fully automatically.”

DownThemAll!:It is a download manager.I use it to download images or files on a webpage at a single click.I have already written an article “Downloading images on a webpage ”“ A quicker way ”“ Tutorial,” which uses this extension.

Description: “DownThemAll is all you can desire from a download manager: it features an advanced accelerator that increases speed up to 400% and it allows you to pause and resume downloads at any time!

DownThemAll is fast, reliable and easy-to-use! It lets you download all the links or images contained in a webpage and much more: you can refine your downloads by fully customizable criteria to get only what you really want!”

StumbleUpon:Install this extension and go on viewing the best sites ranked by the StumbleUpon users. You will never get bored and I am sure you will become addicted.

Description: “StumbleUpon lets you “channelsurf” the best-reviewed sites on the web. It is a collaborative surfing tool for finding and sharing great sites. This helps you find interesting webpages you wouldn’t think to search for.”

Gspace:User your Gmail account as an online file storage.Files uploaded by this extension will appear as an incoming mail and you can forward it to your friends or colleagues with whom you want to share the files at a single mouse click.

Description: “This extension allows you to use your Gmail Space (2.8 GB and growing) for file storage. It acts as an online drive, so you can upload files from your hard drive and access them from every Internet capable system. The interface will make your Gmail account look like a FTP host.

After the installation, you’ll get an option called “Gspace” in your “Tools” menu, which opens the GSpace window. It’s great for storing/sharing files with your friends. Also very good to backup photos and music files (as you can view/listen to them from Gspace).”

Firefox Google Bookmarks:It allows you to create bookmarks on Google Bookmarks and shows the links in a menu like form.

Description: “Creates a menu to access google bookmarks from any computer. Needs Google Account to use this extension.”

FireFTP:It is a tiny FTP extension (only 120KB) for Firefox. It can remember the accounts to connect with a single click.Comes handy when I want to delete a folder on the server, which my full-featured FTP client won’t allow.

Description: “FireFTP is a free, secure, cross-platform FTP client for Mozilla Firefox which provides easy and intuitive access to FTP servers.

Along with transferring your files quickly and efficiently, FireFTP also includes more advanced features such as: directory comparison, syncing directories while navigating, SSL encryption, file hashing, and much more!”

Megaupload SX.3.2:Bypasses the country slot limit.

Description: “Free slots for Megaupload for countries other than United States…”

SwitchProxy Tool:Allows you to quickly switch between a list of proxies defined by you.You can use this tool to make a list of proxies and switch between them quickly.Came handy when I was registering with free hosting services that allow only specific country users (USA, Canada, etc).

Description: “SwitchProxy lets you manage and switch between multiple proxy configurations quickly and easily. You can also use it as an anonymizer to protect your computer from prying eyes. NOTE: In Firefox you can use the toolbar element to save space”
